Cllr Steven Hughes
Steve has called Fishguard and Goodwick home since 2002, where he and his wife Jayne have raised their two sons, Will and Tom. He is passionate about the area and believes strongly in the power of communities to come together and make a positive difference.
After almost 40 years working in the NHS as a mental health nurse, Steve retired in 2026. Much of his career was spent supporting older adults, with his final decade focused on mental capacity law and protecting the rights of people who were unable to advocate for themselves. He also holds a master's degree in Medical Law and Ethics.
Steve has always been keen to give something back to his community. He has volunteered with the Sea Cadets since 2008, joined the Fishguard New Year's Eve Party Committee in 2020, and was elected to Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council in January 2023. He is proud to be serving as Town Mayor for 2026/27, and has selected Paul Satori as his Mayors Charity for the year.
Steve joined the Liberal Democrats in 2016, motivated by a desire to do something positive following the Brexit referendum. He believes that Wales's future is best served within a more federal United Kingdom, with greater powers and decision-making closer to communities.
Steve's local campaigns include bringing the Fishguard Town Hall into Town Council ownership so that it can really belong to the community, fighting for better sports facilities for the area and calling for children's play areas to be kept safe and tidy.
As Chair of the newly formed Preseli Branch of the Pembrokeshire Liberal Democrats, Steve is excited to bring local people together, support community-led initiatives and help build a strong local team.
When he's not busy with his community commitments, Steve can often be found cheering on Swansea City (though he has yet to make it to the stadium!) or watching Star Trek with his family.
